DFW Running Talk: Jane Buthod
===

CHris Detzel: [00:00:00] Welcome to DFW Running Talk. I'm Chris Detzel, so let's get started.

All right. Welcome to another DFW Running Talk. I'm Chris Detzel, and before I get to my special guest, just know that we're doing about 10 or 11 of these quick hit podcasts for folks that are going to Boston Marathon, sometimes for the very first time, sometimes for the 10th time, sixth time, or whatever.

But I wanna get these folks in front of you. And today's special guest is Jane. Jane, how are you?

Jane Buthod: Good, Chris. How are you?

CHris Detzel: Good. I've seen you a lot, mostly on Facebook and around the lake sometimes and things like that. Yeah. So it's

Jane Buthod: Uhhuh

CHris Detzel: good that you came on. I appreciate it.

Jane Buthod: Thank you. I really appreciate the opportunity.

CHris Detzel: Yeah. And so you've run Boston Marathon, I think six times and so I, this'll

Jane Buthod: be a. Will be six. Yeah, this will be my sixth. Yes, this will be my sixth. Yes.

CHris Detzel: Okay, good. I'm glad we established that. And so I wanna go back to your first Boston Marathon. What was that like? How did you get in? Were you excited?

Just tell me about the very first [00:01:00] one.

Jane Buthod: Yeah. So my first one was actually in October of 2021. It was the COVID year.

CHris Detzel: Yeah.

Jane Buthod: And that is my most memorable favorite Boston. And it's the one that I, I don't think any other will live up to it. Number one, it's your first Boston. And there was so many unique aspects to that race that I don't think will ever be duplicated again.

And then I guess, I never thought I would get to like a Boston Marathon just because, they're standards and I I didn't think I would ever qualify, but then when I did, or I found that I could, it just became I guess my my goal for each marathon. Fun fact, I actually lived in Boston for four years, between 2000, 2004.

I wasn't a runner like I am now, and I had no. I wanted nothing to do with the Boston Marathon. I lived maybe two miles off of Boston College right off of Heartbreak Hill. And and I, my school that I went to is actually on Beacon and [00:02:00] Hereford, you know where they go? You turn right on Hereford left on Wildon.

My school's about four blocks from that actual turn. Wow. Yeah, at that time I just was not interested nor, or really had the aspiration to do it. Yeah, so it's funny. Here I am like 20 years later, running it.

CHris Detzel: What what marathon did you get in from the Boston Marathon to the first Boston Marathon?

Jane Buthod: It was actually Fort Worth. It was I think the first marathon after COVID.

CHris Detzel: Yeah,

Jane Buthod: that what opened up. And I that was my second marathon ever, and I qualified then. Not knowing when the next Boston Marathon was gonna be, but it turned out to be in October of 21 instead of April. They moved it.

CHris Detzel: Yeah. Yeah. It's interesting that you did that. That was your very first one, and that was the most memorable. So what did, yeah, what did you run? What was your time to get in back then? I

Jane Buthod: think 3 31, I believe.

CHris Detzel: Okay.

Jane Buthod: In Fort.

CHris Detzel: You in? It was Marathon. No, it was to Fort

Jane Buthod: Worth. Yeah, Fort Worth. That was, it was in Panther Creek.

Andy is [00:03:00] now the race director of it, but it was before his time. Yeah. And it's a very no frills business marathon.

That's

CHris Detzel: right.

Jane Buthod: I, yeah. And it's just stopped. You're just there ba For me it was to see if I could qualify. And thankfully I was able to, at that time

CHris Detzel: I didn't know it was a qualifying course.

And so That's interesting to know. Yes. Okay.

Jane Buthod: Yes. Yeah, I, because that's something you do have to look at. Not all marathons have the qualification, but that one is

CHris Detzel: Yeah that's good to know. And so you've run five of these and you're going onto your six. Is there most, so I understand that's the most memorable Boston, but is there like a right, some really fun things that you love to go do or that you remember about the race course that is just so special?

Jane Buthod: I just. I love to go visit where I went to grad school again.

Because it's like a, it's just, it brings back a lot of memories I love, now with the expo, I guess a lot of the vendors are now on Newberry. I love that part. And I do like to see I guess one of my favorite shakeout runs is the Tracksmith one because all of GFW shows up, like all of us.

Yeah. And from different running groups, different parts of the city. And it's really fun to connect [00:04:00] people there. I meet people there. I end up. Following them on Strava Instagram and vice versa. So your community opens up a lot, but it's like common core running. So that's always fun. And then, just kinda, it's also always fun meeting other people, whether you're online or at the bus or whatever.

And just hearing their stories. And what I think is really cool is that, you get to meet so many people, like from different countries with different accents and and seeing how far they've traveled there, be like to get a world major star or just, the first marathon or the, or whatever.

It's just, that's really cool to see. 'cause you don't, I don't get that a lot here. Obviously living in DFW because it's local and you run with your friends and all but. That is something I look forward to every year.

CHris Detzel: My wife, the last two or three years, she goes, does this shakeout run with these podcast women?

They they have this podcast and they're

Jane Buthod: popular.

CHris Detzel: Oh,

Jane Buthod: yeah. Run far, run farther and faster.

CHris Detzel: Yeah. Yeah, that's exactly right.

Jane Buthod: And

Yeah, Uhhuh, yeah, I follow them too. Yeah. I've met them and I usually go to their their talk at Expo. [00:05:00]

CHris Detzel: Yep.

Jane Buthod: And so I may do that one this year. I'm not sure exactly what I'm gonna do, but Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about.

Yeah.

CHris Detzel: We are also going to, and this is what you get at Boston. So Saturday night at about six dozen. What was the other one? Kara? Kara

Jane Buthod: voucher.

CHris Detzel: Yes.

Jane Buthod: They have a, so

CHris Detzel: Delin and Kara voucher, they have a podcast. I'm gonna do it live. We're going to that Uhhuh, so that's gonna be fun.

Jane Buthod: Oh. Okay. Yeah, I think I saw tickets for that.

I'm not quite sure exactly what I'm doing the weekend yet, so that might be something I'm interested in doing as well too. Yeah.

CHris Detzel: Yeah. You better sign up now though 'cause it's gonna get

Jane Buthod: Yeah, I know. They sell out. Yeah, that's pretty quick. Yeah,

CHris Detzel: so we, we did that not so long was it here? I forgot we, we did that not too long ago.

We were somewhere anyways, so that's cool. I do the shakeout runs and things like that. I know that. Pegasus has this shakeout run in the,

In the, in that big hotel. The Plaza, Boston Plaza. At the Park

Jane Buthod: Plaza, yeah.

CHris Detzel: Uhhuh Hilton. Uhhuh. The Park Plaza, yeah.

Jane Buthod: Yep.

CHris Detzel: And so I ran with them last year just to, I don't run Boston, but, so that's fun.

So there's a lot of things to do.

Jane Buthod: Yep.

CHris Detzel: Is there a particular race that, you look at the five you've done so far that just oh [00:06:00] my gosh, that was really rough or kind, the weather was crazy, or,

Jane Buthod: yeah, that was two years ago.

CHris Detzel: Okay.

Jane Buthod: That was two years ago. It was the really hot one. I remember after the race, after I crossed Finish Line, I'm like, proof of life.

I made it. The weather is, people are already talking about the weather. It can be, thankfully I didn't, I wasn't at any of the torrential, rain downpours or

CHris Detzel: Yeah.

Jane Buthod: It

CHris Detzel: was insane.

Jane Buthod: Yeah, it gets very hot, very quickly. 'Cause we don't start till about. I don't start to pop about 10 40 this year.

And usually my long runs are long done before then, because I'll get up at five and do it. So to start at 10 40 and to end about two 30 or whatever the sun is, right there. Also, people get sunburn and it's just, that was a tough one. But for the most part, the weather's pretty fair.

I, yeah. And and I so I hope this year too, but you never know. We can get. It changes on a dime and you can have all the headwinds you want or whatever it is. So you just gotta go with, you gotta run the race that the day it is because, and that's why you have to do all your training [00:07:00] runs, whether it's a really hot one or a cold one, or windy, because you never know what race day it's gonna, give you, and it's one of those, you gotta embrace the suck when it's really bad on your training run, especially the long runs, because that's exactly what the weather could be like. So

CHris Detzel: is there any race that you kinda look at that, oh my gosh, I can't believe that moment or that man won, or, you get to meet somebody that was popular or, I don't know.

Is there any kind of. That

Jane Buthod: get into, yeah, I met, not the race, but actually at the Fairmont. I met me there, which is really cool. Oh, wow. Yeah I was actually, I was there visiting the dog, Corey Cop, dunno if you follow, but it's a Labrador that I guess is the ambassador for the Fairmont. And I just went to meet them and.

There was mid in the in the lobby, which is cool. And that's where I think all the elites and all the the stay. So if you hang around there long enough, I guess you'll see one or two of them. That was cool.

CHris Detzel: Little story is my wife got, so if you've been like 10 plus years in a row or something like that Yes.

Then you, I forget what it's called, but you The unicorn club or something, is that

Jane Buthod: Yeah.

CHris Detzel: What it's

Jane Buthod: called. I think you're a legacy. [00:08:00] Yes. Uhhuh

CHris Detzel: legacy. Yeah.

Jane Buthod: Yes.

CHris Detzel: And so last year she bought me a pass was a hundred bucks. So you can do a guest pass. So it's cool.

Jane Buthod: Okay. Yeah.

CHris Detzel: So that's at the hotel you're talking where all the leads at?

Jane Buthod: Yes.

CHris Detzel: Look I didn't see the Elite or whatever, but they had a breakfast for me and for her. Wow. She can just sit until the, they have a bus just for them. I take them out to Boston. Yeah. They sit in the bus for as long, they have bathrooms, and then I can then go there for lunch and then go watch and go into the finisher corral and watch everybody come in.

After 12 o'clock. So if you're running under three hours, I won't be able to watch you, but after that I can do it. So anyways.

Jane Buthod: Oh yeah, that's it's funny you should mention at the 10, that's what I'm trying to go for is 10 in a road consecutive.

CHris Detzel: Nice.

Jane Buthod: So I'm about halfway there and and as long as life lets me, as long as I keep qualifying, I'll be able to do it.

I do have a qualifier for 2027 I'll be going hopefully knock on wood and next for my seventh, and then once I get to 10 I'll reassess things, it's just as long as I can qualify for, as as I'll try to do it as long as life [00:09:00] allows me,

CHris Detzel: yeah. I think that's awesome and you've been doing great. Is what are you looking forward to for 2026 Boston Marathon?

Jane Buthod: One of my really good friends who will be going for the first time, and I like. I dunno I've been trying to give her some tips and advice. Unsolicited or not just to, make her experience a little bit more, enjoyable.

That's what I really like doing is meeting people for the first time and just seeing the excitement, just seeing their, like a wide-eyed child oh my gosh, this is awesome. When you're at the athletes wheel is about to start or you always see people like tearing up. 'cause this is, this is either the life.

Or they've worked so hard to get here and I really love that. I just love seeing that. And so I get to see that with one of my really good friends, Monica, for the first time. Where she's running it for the first time. And so that's, I'm looking forward to that. Spending the weekend with her and doing that.

CHris Detzel: Does she live here in Dallas or?

Jane Buthod: She does.

CHris Detzel: Okay. We

Jane Buthod: run up in Allen Mo. My, most of my training runs are with Craig Ranch in Allen,

CHris Detzel: yeah.

Jane Buthod: McKinney area. And lots of people from there also going. And so she was able to qualify with Cal Town of all Reese's [00:10:00] when there was a very com very, yes, very complicated.

It's pretty warm too

CHris Detzel: that day.

Jane Buthod: Yes. And she did it and she was able to qualify for Boston since I was really happy with that. Yeah. And so here we're two weeks out and so it should be a really good time with that.

CHris Detzel: Yeah, look I'm looking forward to it and looking forward to seeing all the runners.

What any kind of advice before we go to top it off or thoughts that you might give to

Jane Buthod: the arts. For folks who are going, whether it be yet, you said your first time, fifth time, 10th time. We're in taper now. So enjoy the taper. Personally love taper. I know a lot of folks, they, the taper crazies or whatever, nothing you do in the next two weeks is gonna really improve your time.

If anything, if all it's gonna do is you're gonna injure yourself. And I really take that to heart. And just let your body heal and let your body just take up all the training and let's do this, and should be. When you're there, don't I know you, if you're special for your first, I know you wanna walk around everything and do everything.

Hold off if you can.

CHris Detzel: Yeah.

Jane Buthod: Again, you don't want to, do [00:11:00] anything to, sabotage your race or that last, 10 miler at, marathon pace. It was not really gonna do anything to your fitness at this point. So I, yeah,

CHris Detzel: I hear.

Jane Buthod: Yeah. And then just enjoy it. You worked this hard and go get it.

Have fun, meet people, talk to people. And I would hold off probably waiting to eat anything fun until after or drink for that matter. But, that's a personal decision, yeah, that's celebrate after when it's all done. So

CHris Detzel: had another guy that, so we went to do this. This is a couple years ago, a bunch of people from Dallas went to Utah to run a downhill race, and they were doing the marathon the night before.

They were like, this dude was, his name's Matt. He was eating like all the lasagna and everything. Just. Tons of food. Yeah, tons. That night I was like, dude, they were making fun of me. 'cause I was just to, had some salmon and salad. Like it was like, hey man, I'm not gonna eat crazy stuff.

I'm not saying you shouldn't eat pasta and things, you know before, but not the night before the race. The last thing I'm gonna have to [00:12:00] do is go to the bathroom.

Jane Buthod: Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. I usually, honestly, this may sound boring, but I usually go to Chipotle. Right there on Exactly. And just get right and just eat what's familiar, and I just drink my carb drink and that's it after the race, something different. So yeah. I just look, I look forward to that. Yeah.

CHris Detzel: Jane, so this has been really good. Something I would say is, since you do have some friends coming, I will be doing quick hit interviews on Saturday and Sunday from two to four Park Plaza.

Okay. Somewhere in either at the Starbucks there, or maybe even outside. I don't know where. Uhhuh. But tell 'em to come by. Or if you're listening to this podcast come by, I'm gonna do as many as I can. I'm gonna also do some quick hits, push them out to the YouTube and Instagram and things like that,

Jane Buthod: okay. Will do. Yeah.

CHris Detzel: All right. Jane, thanks for coming on. Thanks everybody for tuning into these quick hits. Make sure you rate and review us. We can use all the ratings and reviews we can get. That really helps. And then go to DFW running talk.substack.com to subscribe to our newsletter again, Jane, that was awesome.

Thank you so much.

Jane Buthod: Thanks Chris, I appreciate it. See you in [00:13:00] Boston.

CHris Detzel: Alright,

Jane Buthod: bye.

Chris Detzel is the passionate host and creator of "DFW Running Talk," the premier podcast dedicated to showcasing the vibrant running community across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Since launching the show in October 2024, Chris has established himself as a central voice in North Texas running culture, conducting in-depth conversations with elite athletes, coaches, race directors, and inspiring everyday runners who define the region's diverse running scene. As both interviewer and active participant in the DFW running community, Chris brings an authentic perspective shaped by years of personal running experience. While he describes himself as primarily a half marathon runner rather than a marathoner - citing the extensive training commitment and unpredictability of marathon race day - his deep knowledge of running culture spans the full spectrum from 5Ks to ultramarathons. His preference for half marathons stems from their balance of challenge and accessibility, allowing him to race monthly without the intensive training demands of longer distances. Chris's connection to elite running runs through his family - his wife Lea Ivy is an accomplished marathoner who has completed the Boston Marathon 12 times consecutively, achieving a personal best of 3:14 at age 45. This personal connection to high-level competition, combined with his own running journey, gives Chris unique insight into both the elite and recreational sides of the sport. He often travels to Boston to support Lea's racing and has become part of the broader running community that gathers around major events like the Boston Marathon. Through DFW Running Talk, Chris has created more than just a podcast - he's built a platform that celebrates the depth and diversity of North Texas running talent. His interviews reveal the stories behind local legends, from sub-3:00 marathoners to innovative coaches, from race directors creating memorable experiences to everyday runners achieving extraordinary personal transformations. The show has featured conversations with accomplished athletes like Shantel Cloud (sub-3:00 marathoner), Travis Dowd (Dallas Marathon winner), and Mimi Smith (Olympic Trials competitor), alongside community builders and running industry professionals. What sets Chris apart as a host is his ability to connect with guests on multiple levels - as a fellow runner who understands training cycles and race strategy, as a community member invested in the local running scene, and as a skilled interviewer who draws out both technical insights and personal stories. His approach prioritizes authentic conversation over surface-level inspiration, resulting in episodes that offer genuine value to runners of all levels. Based in the Dallas area, Chris continues to grow DFW Running Talk's reach across multiple platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube, while maintaining strong connections to local running organizations like Dallas Running Club and participating in the broader Texas running community. His work documents and celebrates a running culture that he believes is "way more badass than it has any right to be."
