3:04 and Counting: How Kendall Rose Became a Coach, CIM Ambassador, and Sub-3 Hopeful

In this episode of DFW Running Talk, host Chris Detzel sits down with Kendall Rose, a rising star in the Dallas running community who's quickly making her mark as both an elite marathoner and certified running coach.
Kendall shares her inspiring journey from a burned-out college athlete who barely ran during her time at Texas A&M to a sub-3:05 marathoner with her sights set on breaking 3 hours at the 2025 California International Marathon (CIM). Along the way, she opens up about:
Running Highlights:
  • Her unconventional return to running through a golden doodle puppy and F45 classes
  • A breakthrough first half marathon (1:35) that led to marathon training
  • The painful lessons from her first marathon at Irving (3:36)
  • Earning her Boston Qualifier at Houston 2023 (3:22)
  • The emotional experience of running Boston 2024
  • Her stunning 18-minute PR at CIM 2024 (3:04:51) and the strategic race execution that made it possible
Coaching & Community:
  • How she became RRCA certified and started coaching runners remotely
  • Her role as a CIM Ambassador and what that means
  • Leading the Not Your Average Run Club's half marathon training program with 34 runners
  • The importance of building running community in Dallas and her connections with Pegasus, White Rock Running Co-op, and Frisco Running Club
Race Strategy Insights: Kendall provides fascinating insights into her strategic approach to racing, including how she studied the CIM course, executed a nearly perfect race plan, and made a bold mid-race decision at mile 13 to test her sub-3 hour potential. She discusses the art and science of coaching, the importance of trial and error in racing, and why sometimes you need to blow up at a 5K to learn how to pace properly.
Whether you're chasing your first PR, looking for coaching insights, or trying to find your running community in Dallas, Kendall's story offers valuable lessons about smart training, strategic racing, and the power of showing up consistently—even when you're shy and don't know anyone yet.

Chris Detzel
Chris Detzel is the passionate host and creator of "DFW Running Talk," the premier podcast dedicated to showcasing the vibrant running community across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Since launching the show in October 2024, Chris has established himself as a central voice in North Texas running culture, conducting in-depth conversations with elite athletes, coaches, race directors, and inspiring everyday runners who define the region's diverse running scene. As both interviewer and active participant in the DFW running community, Chris brings an authentic perspective shaped by years of personal running experience. While he describes himself as primarily a half marathon runner rather than a marathoner - citing the extensive training commitment and unpredictability of marathon race day - his deep knowledge of running culture spans the full spectrum from 5Ks to ultramarathons. His preference for half marathons stems from their balance of challenge and accessibility, allowing him to race monthly without the intensive training demands of longer distances. Chris's connection to elite running runs through his family - his wife Lea Ivy is an accomplished marathoner who has completed the Boston Marathon 12 times consecutively, achieving a personal best of 3:14 at age 45. This personal connection to high-level competition, combined with his own running journey, gives Chris unique insight into both the elite and recreational sides of the sport. He often travels to Boston to support Lea's racing and has become part of the broader running community that gathers around major events like the Boston Marathon. Through DFW Running Talk, Chris has created more than just a podcast - he's built a platform that celebrates the depth and diversity of North Texas running talent. His interviews reveal the stories behind local legends, from sub-3:00 marathoners to innovative coaches, from race directors creating memorable experiences to everyday runners achieving extraordinary personal transformations. The show has featured conversations with accomplished athletes like Shantel Cloud (sub-3:00 marathoner), Travis Dowd (Dallas Marathon winner), and Mimi Smith (Olympic Trials competitor), alongside community builders and running industry professionals. What sets Chris apart as a host is his ability to connect with guests on multiple levels - as a fellow runner who understands training cycles and race strategy, as a community member invested in the local running scene, and as a skilled interviewer who draws out both technical insights and personal stories. His approach prioritizes authentic conversation over surface-level inspiration, resulting in episodes that offer genuine value to runners of all levels. Based in the Dallas area, Chris continues to grow DFW Running Talk's reach across multiple platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube, while maintaining strong connections to local running organizations like Dallas Running Club and participating in the broader Texas running community. His work documents and celebrates a running culture that he believes is "way more badass than it has any right to be."

Kendall Rose is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, RRCA-Certified Run Coach, and CIM Ambassador who has quickly become a influential voice in the Dallas running community. When she's not crushing miles on the pavement, she works in supply chain management for a large CPG company and serves as the Dallas City Lead for Forever Athletes Sporting Club. Growing up in North Dallas, Kendall was a competitive soccer player and varsity cross country and track athlete. After earning her BBA in Supply Chain Management from Texas A&M University, she found herself sedentary and struggling to incorporate fitness into adult life—a relatable experience for many in their early 20s. Her return to running came unexpectedly through her Goldendoodle puppy, Millie, who had a knack for waking up at 4 AM on Sundays when Kendall's F45 studio was closed. After one Sunday morning run turned into a surprisingly good 4-miler, Kendall progressively built up to a half marathon, thinking, "I might as well try 5 miles next week." That casual progression led to a 1:35 debut and reignited her passion for running. Since that first half marathon in December 2021, Kendall has become a 2x half marathoner and 4x full marathoner, including a memorable experience at the 2024 Boston Marathon. Her improvement speaks to her dedication and smart training: she's dropped her half marathon time from 1:35 to 1:28 and her marathon time from 3:36 to an impressive 3:04:51 at the 2024 California International Marathon—an 18-minute PR and a performance that has her eyeing a sub-3:00 finish at CIM 2025. As a coach, Kendall works with eight athletes across the country (from San Antonio to Tennessee) and co-leads a 34-person half marathon training program with Not Your Average Run Club in Dallas. She's passionate about the intersection of running and strength training, programming her own resistance work and helping others understand that coaching is "90% learning someone's life, 10% programming"—fitting running into people's schedules in healthy, sustainable ways. When she's not logging miles with Pegasus, White Rock Running Co-op, or Frisco Running Club, you'll find Kendall nerding out about race strategy, helping runners execute the perfect race plan, or convincing people that blowing up at a 5K is actually a valuable learning experience.
